Tell us about your Shoestring Adventures!
My first adventure was to Montana de Oro on the weekend March 11, 2016. After a four hour flight delay in San Francisco from NYC, I finally landed in San Luis Obispo, which seemed like a dream. The lush land and chill people made me feel like I was in the right place, the exact welcome I needed after being stuck in San Francisco.
Once I reached the park, I was greeted by a group of enthusiastic warriors. It was raining Friday night, but that didn’t stop us. We had a lovely dinner and s’mores around the camp fire.
The following day was filled with beautiful weather and hikes to Valencia peak and the Bluff trail. The landscape put me at ease, and the clean air made it easy to breathe. No matter who I go camping with, campfire time seems to be the most special. This adventure was no exception.
On Sunday, we all chipped in with cleaning and packing, then headed to the Point Buchon Trail which felt like I was walking around the fields of Scotland. We ended the trip with a humble sandwich right before the rain returned, then we said our goodbyes. It was a treat to meet such awesome people in a short amount of time. I’m looking forward to more adventures with my Shoestring Warriors!
What advice do you have for first-time campers who want to get outdoors?
JUST GO FOR IT! Alyx provides great info on what to pack, but seriously, no reason to over think it. If you like the idea of camping and being outdoors, just remember that and embrace every moment while you’re there.
The perfect s’more?
I’m not a Hersey’s fan, so burnt marshmallow graham cracker sandwich sans chocolate.
